We build communications as a strategic enabler for social impact organisations.

Wordmatter is a communications social enterprise shaped from within, and for, the non-profit sector. It was incubated inside Gram Vikas, where we built a communications function from the ground up. That experience made one thing clear: building communication capacity needs a different model — one rooted in how organisations actually operate, shaped by their culture, grounded in their constraints, and built for long-term goals. It takes deep listening, respect for context, and a bias for relentless execution.

What we help build
Reactive and driven by last-minute asks
Planned and proactive, building visibility and trust over time.
It is everyone’s side-job, be it programme staff or field workers.
A skilled internal team with ownership and clarity of role, producing consistent output.
Stuck in endless approval loops.
Decision-making autonomy that allows it to move at the speed of relevance.
Doing the work, but staying invisible beyond existing networks, with minimal presence in sector conversations.
A visible, credible presence across media, communities, and sector platforms — recognised as a thought leader shaping conversations and contributing to field-wide
learning.
learning.
Limited, ad-hoc engagement with donors and partners, often transactional and short term.
Strong, long-term relationships with donors and partners who are deeply invested in your mission and want to grow with you.
Outdated, neglected digital presence.
A digital footprint that reflects your relevance, values, and ongoing work.
No way to measure what is working, and no learning loop.
Regular review, data-driven learning, and continuous improvement.
Over-dependence on external consultants.
In-house capability to manage, adapt, and drive the function independently.
Seen as a support function.
Seen (and invested in) as a strategic growth lever - attracting talent and shaping reputation.

We are fuelled by a few firm beliefs.
Institution building is essential for social impact.
And communication, when prioritised and given adequate time, resources and talent, can be one of its strongest enablers.
Execution as strategy
We have an action bias. We start solving, and build systems, tools, and roles along the way. The path to strategy is through action.
Embed, don’t outsource
Sustainable communication is shaped from within, by people who understand the organisation’s rhythms, constraints, and culture. Outside-in models rarely stick.
Do the work, every day
Trust and visibility are not one-off wins. They come from steady, grounded communication. We help teams build the habits that sustain it.
